The event generated over $2,700 that will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund specifically for the Wounded Warriors Battalion West Career Development Services. Funds will help provide career education and training for over 350 men and women Wounded Warrior marines who are transitioning from military to civilian life. The event was held at the historic San Diego Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. Over 65 attendees, including veterans from World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq/Afghanistan, enjoyed delicious food served by Café Merlot, toured the museum, and participated in the silent auction.
Retired Lt. Colonel Gary Zegley, USMC, former Camp Pendleton Wounded Warrior Battalion Leader, shared highlights of his experience with the Wounded Warriors; the purpose and accomplishments of the Battalion’s Career Development Services; and several success stories of marines who have benefited from the program.
Linda M. Stanley, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Wounded Warrior Alumnus and National Speaker, deeply touched the audience by sharing her experience as a Night Supervisor/Clinical Nurse in Iraq and her consequent battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Linda currently serves as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at the San Diego VA, La Jolla and is a national speaker on PTSD to various professional groups. She was chosen out of 500 Iraq veterans to represent the Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans of
America (IAVA) to present to over one hundred members of Congress and their Staff from the Department of Defense, VA and the Administration in 2012. She helped the audience understand what people with PTSD experience and how they must work to overcome its impact on their lives and careers.
As a professional training and development organization, ASTD-SD is proud and honored to have helped support such a worthy cause. No one summed it up better than Nancy McMonigal, President Elect of ASTD-SD: “It was a life-changing event.”
Thank you again to the volunteers and attendees who helped make the fundraiser a tremendous success!
